Introduction

Fatimah (AS) is the youngest daughter of the Holy Prophet of Islam (SAW) and Hazrat Khadijat (AS). Therefore, she was one of the members of pure Household of the Prophet (SAW). Hazrat Fatima (AS) was a wife of Hazrat Ali (AS) and mother of Imam Hasan (AS) and Imam Husain (AS). For Muslims. Hazrat Fatimah (AS) is a vital character in the religion of Islam and is considered a perfect role model for all Muslim women.

Birth of Hazrat Fatima (AS)

There are differences of opinion among the historians on the exact birthdate of Hazrat Fatima (AS), but the widely accepted view is that she was born was born in Mecca on Friday, 20th Jumada’-th-Thaniyah in the fifth year of the declaration of the Prophethood (615 AD). At the time of her birth, she was the fifth child of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a) and Hazrat Khadijah daughter of Khuwaylid (AS). Interestingly, Hazrat Fatima (AS) was the only surviving child after the demise of the Prophet (s.a.w.a) and the one and only genealogical chain of the pure lineage of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a).

Titles of Hazrat Fatima (AS)

Apart from Fatimah, she was given several titles and appellations to show her noble status in the sight of Allah, the Holy Prophet and the Muslims. In this regards, Imam Ja’far Sadiq (AS) was reported to have said[1] (4): "Fatima has nine names with Allah (Exalted be His Holy Names). These are:

1. Fatima (One is protected and saved from the Hell fire).

2. As-Siddiqah (The Truthful)

3. Al-Mubarakah (The Blessed)

4. At-Tahirah (The Virtuous)

5. Az-Zakiyyah (The Chaste)

6. Ar Radiyatul (The Contented one)

7. Al- Mardiyyah (The Gratified &Satisfied one)

8. Al-Muhaddatha (One who is spoken to by the Angel)

9. Az-Zahra (The Splendid)

Besides, Fatima (AS) also had other appellations such as: ‘Al-Batool’ (The Virgin), ‘Al-Hanee’a’ (The affectionate one to her children). And above all, for her unique love and affection to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a), she (AS) was at the same time known as ‘Ummu Abeeha’ (i.e. her father’s mother). Similarly, she has also been honoured with the title of ‘Umm-ul-Aaimma’ (i.e. Mother of the Imams).

Marriage of Hazrat Fatima (AS)

It was documented in the history that many of the companions of the Prophet, including Abu-Bakr and Umar sought for Fatimah's hand in marriage but they were turned down by the Prophet (s.a.w.a) saying that he was awaiting a directive from God on her destiny. Thereafter, Hazrat Ali, who was a cousin of the Prophet approached him and asked for the hand of Fatima in marriage. The Prophet (s.a.w.a) put forward the proposal from Ali to her daughter, Fatima, who remained silent and did not reject the proposal like the previous ones. The Holy Prophet took this to be a sign of her affirmation and consent.

Meanwhile, there are differences of opinion on the actual date of the marriage but a popular view is that the marriage between Ali and Fatima was solemnized on Friday, Dhul-Hijjah 1, the second year of Hijrah.

The Status of Hazrat Fatima

1. Fatima in the Qur’an

Hazrat Fatimah and her pure household have been praised and acknowledge by Allah in several verses of the Qur'an. In the first place, the verse 33 of chapter 33, which was revealed in honour of the Prophet’s Household, Fatima, Ali, Hasan and Husain –according to traditions from the Sunni and Shia sources[2]-were the member of the pure Household (Ahl al-Bayt) who are cleansed from every filth and they were thoroughly purified. Secondly, Hazrat Fatima is among the nearest kinsfolk (Dhul-Qurbah) whose love and affection are made compulsory on the Muslim according to verse 23 of Qur’an 42. Similarly, Hazrat Fatima represented the entire Muslim women during a malediction[3] (Mubahala) between Islam and a group of Najran’s Christians as stated in verse 61 of Qur’an 3.

2. Fatima in the Hadith

Hazrat Fatima (AS) occupied a special place in the heart of the Prophet (s.a.w.a). She was loved by Allah, His noble Prophet and all believers. The Prophet’s love for her was mixed with respect and exaltation. Pleasing her is synonymous to pleasing the Messenger of Allah while hurting her is tantamount to hurting the Prophet of God.

In Sahih Bukhari, the Messenger (AS) of Allah was reported saying: "Fatima is part of me; he who harms her harms me[4]."

Similarly, Aisha said to Hazrat Fatimah Zahra (AS):

Alas! May I informed you that I heard the Messenger of God (SAW) saying: "The leaders of the women of Paradise are four: Maryam daughter of Imran, Fatimah daughter of Muhammad, Khadijah daughter of Khuwaylid and Asiyah”[5]

Anas son of Malik reported the holy Prophet (SAW) to have said:

"The outstanding women of the worlds are four: Maryam daughter of Imran, Asiyah wife of Pharaoh, Khadijah daughter of Khuwaylid and Fatimah daughter of Muhammad"[6]

Personality of Hazrat Fatima (AS)

Hazrat Fatima was a devoted worshiper of Allah. She devoted her life to the worship of Allah and for the services of humanity. (AS) is the most outstanding personality, unparalleled heroine and unequaled herald in the history of Islam and beyond. She (AS) is indeed a perfect role model of a daughter when dealing with her father; a perfect role model of an obedient wife when dealing with her husband and likewise a perfect role model of a devoted mother. Above all, she (AS) is a manifestation of faith in Allah, prophethood, the day of Judgment, self-sacrifice, bravery, kindness and abundant generosity in the way of presentation of Islam and the Quran to the humanity.

Death of Hazrat Fatima (AS)

There are differences of opinion on the exact date of her death. However, a popular view is that she passed away at the age of 18 in Medina on 14th Jumadi'l-ula, 11 AH, which is correspondent to August 7, 632 A.D. Fatima was buried in the graveyard called Jannatu'l-Baqi' in Medina in an unmarked and unknown grave. According to her will, she instructed her husband, Hazrat Ali (AS) to bury her in secret at night in an unmarked grave in order to show displeasure to the oppression melted on her and her pure household. Uptil now, the actual burial place of the only surviving child of the noble Prophet of Islam, Hazrat Fatima (AS) is unknown to the Muslims.

Peace be upon you, Oh daughter of the possessor of outstanding merit above all Prophets, Messengers, and angels!

Peace be upon you, Oh Leader of the Women of the Worlds.

Peace be upon you, Oh Wife of the Vicegerent of Allah!

Peace be upon you, Oh mother of Hasan and Hussein, the Leaders of the Youth of Paradise!

Peace be upon you, Oh most truthful and martyr.

Peace be upon you, who was pleased to resign to the will of Allah and Allah was pleased with you.

Peace be upon you, Oh possessor of outstanding merit of above others, and the pure.

Peace be upon you, who is holy and guarded herself against sins!

Peace be upon you, who is knowledgeable and an authority on traditions of the Prophet.

Peace be upon you, who was subjected to anger and oppression.

Peace be upon you, Oh Fatima, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, and May Allah have mercy on you and bless you.
